Title: A Disease Leading to Death
Author: Riu Kushigi
It was absolutely fantastic! The excitement hasn’t faded even after finishing it! I really enjoyed it!
The following contains spoilers!
Masaya was deceived all along, wasn’t he? It was good that he realized it midway! If he had continued to mistake Haimura’s child for his own, who knows what he might have done. That was close…
“Kano Hikari” is high up on the list…? Was Kano-san also targeted by Haimura…? Masaya managed to escape, but it seems like it might be Kano-san’s turn next…? This pattern might continue until Haimura is actually sentenced to death…
What would have happened, I wonder. If Haimura hadn’t been adopted by Oriko-san but had been adopted by someone else much earlier, would these mass murders have been avoided? Hmm, since Oriko-san seemed to be under Haimura’s thumb, it might have ended up the same way even if Haimura had been adopted by someone else…
A Disease Leading to Death. Is this referring to Haimura? Is Haimura the disease? Because of past abuse, he ended up developing a mental disorder that led him to commit crimes serious enough to warrant the death penalty? Hmm, there was a quote at the beginning, “Despair is the sickness unto death. — Kierkegaard.” Does this relate? Ah, would they include a quote at the beginning that has nothing to do with the main story…? So, it is a related phrase. Hmm, was Haimura in despair? Did the abuse he suffered in the past lead him to despair and reckless behavior? Haimura himself said that losing his mother caused him to lose his restraints… Maybe that’s the case?
Masaya somehow made it through, but there are still twenty-something names on the list, right? Haimura’s rhetoric is skilled, captivating even lawyers. Perhaps one of the people on the list might be influenced by Haimura to actually commit murder… Is this story really a happy ending? But, leaving this shadow behind as it ends is quite effective…
